Taylor Perry hopes he can score more goals for Exeter City after finding the net for the first time.

The 25-year-old summer signing side-footed home from inside the area after eight minutes in the Grecians' Jersey Mike's Trophy fixture with Oxford United on Tuesday night.

The game ended 2-2 before City won a penalty shootout 4-3 to go top of their group with six points from their three games - their rivals have all played once.

"It's obviously great to score a goal and my first for Exeter," Perry told BBC Radio Devon.

"It's a great feeling, especially at home as well, but I just want to carry that on now and hopefully it's the first of many.

"It was a great game for us," added Perry, who moved to Exeter in the summer after three seasons at Shrewsbury Town.

"They were very good opposition, they had a few good players playing, they went strong so it was even better for us, it was a proper test and I thought we played some good stuff and we can really take that into the weekend as well."

Having had a stuttering start to life in League Two, Exeter got just their second win of the season last week when they beat Rotherham United 1-0.

Perry hopes that victory, along with a morale-boosting performance against a League One side on Tuesday night, can be the catalyst to move the 20th-placed Grecians further up the League Two table.

They travel to Perry's former club with the aim of getting a first point on the road since a 1-1 draw at Bolton in April - Exeter last won an away league game on 24 January when they beat Port Vale 3-1 at Vale Park.

"The main thing to do on the weekend is get the three points, that's what everyone cares about," he said.

"So to win on Saturday against Rotherham, and to obviously win the penalty shootout last night, it takes that winning momentum feeling into the weekend and hopefully we can carry that on now and get a run going."

Perry has featured in eight of Exeter's nine League Two games since his summer move, starting their past four games in all competitions.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers academy player - who featured in two League Cup ties for the club - has left his native Midlands for the first time to join Exeter.

He says he has settled in well to life in Devon and hopes it will help him grow as a player and as a person.

"I wanted to come out of my comfort zone," he said.

"I've moved away from home, I don't see my family as much - I obviously still see them, but I was living at home with my Dad every day, so it's quite a change.

"It's hard at times because you're on your own, but it's something I've had to adapt to and it's becoming normal now really.

"It's all based on my footballing perspective, I wanted a new challenge which I was given here, so I just want to bring the best of me on the football pitch as well and that will come if I keep playing like I did last night."
