From the Sound of Battle to the Silence of Peace

Hannah French presents a concert given by the Bellot Ensemble at the Toll Gavel United Church in Beverley as part of this year's Beverley and East Riding Early Music Festival. The concert was titled 'From the Sound of Battle to the Silence of Peace', and explored how composers responded to war and its aftermath across 17th-century Europe - whether in memories of conflict or direct representation. The Bellot Ensemble are Radio 3's current New Generation Baroque Ensemble, and are comprised of two violins, two violas de gamba, a theorbo and a keyboard. Much of their work focuses on 17th-century music from across Europe, music written during a period of enormous change and experimentation, where composers were beginning to push instruments to completely new directions.
