What is a Logical Channel Number (LCN)?

A Logical Channel Number (LCN) is the number assigned to a television or radio service on your TV or set-top box. It determines where a channel appears in your programme guide.

For example, on Freeview:

  • BBC One is typically found on channel 1.
  • BBC Two is typically found on channel 2.
  • BBC Radio stations are usually found in the 700 range.

LCNs are used to make it easier for viewers and listeners to find services without needing to know the broadcast frequency. When you retune your TV, the channel list is organised using these logical channel numbers.

If you cannot find a service on its usual channel number, try retuning your equipment, as channel numbers can occasionally change when updates are made to the platform.
