  Micro Credit 15 February 2005
can the loan scheme reduce poverty in Uzbekistan?

The UN is declaring this year International Year of Micro Credit, because it believes that loan schemes for women can help to halve extreme poverty during the next decade.

Micro Credit is a system of giving small loans to help the poor start businesses. And one place where these schemes are taking off is in the central Asian republic of Uzbekistan. Largely Muslim with a predominantly rural economy, Uzbekistan is at a crossroads as it emerges from decades of Soviet dominance. As the country opens up, the status of women too is changing.

Jamsheda Young reports from Samarkand.
