  Hampstead Ponds 04 January 2005
What draws swimmers in all weathers?

Swimming in the open air, in natural surroundings on a warm day can be a joy. But how about dunking yourself in a freezing lake in the middle of winter? Scores of brave people turn up every single morning of the year with their towels and swimming costumes to London's Hampstead Ponds, a series of natural lakes on Hampstead Heath.

People have been swimming in the ponds for more than a hundred years, and recently fans of the pond have successfully campaigned to save them from closure.

Liz Pearson went off to the women's pond with regular swimmer Margaret, 83, to see for herself what it is that draws in swimmers in all weathers.
