  Gabriela Zapolska 02 December 2004
Was she the female Chekhov?

Gabriela Zapolska, nicknamed 'Zola in a Skirt', was one of the most successful and famous playwrights of her day. Writing over a century ago she's now little-known beyond her native Poland.

Her private life was a scandal; a broken marriage, an affair, escape from a Warsaw convent whilst pregnant and even rumours she was a spy. One of her plays has now been revived.

Teresa Murjas, Lecturer in Theatre Reading University and Dr Elwira Grossman join Jenni to discuss whether Zapolska was Poland's Chekhov.

The Man by Gabriela Zapolska is at the Myra McCulloch Theatre, Bulmershe Court, University of Reading from 1 to 4  December, and at the  POSK Theatre, King Street, Hammersmith, London on 15 and 16 January
