a traditional winter warmer
Sloe gin was originally devised to disguise the defects of poor, tainted distillations. These days, it’s a traditional winter warmer. Sloes are the small, hard fruit of the blackthorn - one of the ancestors of the cultivated plum.
Julia Brown from North Yorkshire, has revived her family tradition of sloe gin making with a bumper crop gathered from the wild . She's bottles her own recipe and also makes sloe-gin chocolate as a side-line.
Jill Hopkins joined Julia as they drove across the fields of Manor Farm near Malton to where production starts - in the hedgerows.
