its impact on girls' education in developing countries
Violence is one of the main reasons why girls in parts of the developing world aren't going to school. A report by ActionAid looked at 12 countries and found that girls encounter violence in school, near school and on the journey to and from school.
Fellow-students are often responsible, but teachers are also guilty. Some girls drop out as a result; others never get taught at all because their parents fear for their safety. Given that educating girls is seen as the single most effective way of tackling poverty - what can be done to make school a safer place?
Jenni discusses the issues.
