a special report by Joan Bakewell
When Kofi Annan addressed the World Aids Conference in Bangkok earlier this year he described the new face of AIDs as that of a young black African woman between the ages of 16 and 24.
Recent studies suggest that almost half of all AIDS sufferers are now women and the the number infected is increasing in every region of the world, including the United Kingdom.
In a special report, journalist and presenter Joan Bakewell reports on a project in South Africa where women with HIV are providing counselling and medical advice for other women with HIV.
Woman's Hour hears how women who are HIV positive in the UK support one another.
