In 1918 Alice Longstaff began a career that was to span 70 years
The daughter of farmers, she took the unusual step of taking an apprenticeship as a photographer in a small studio in Hebden Bridge, located in the Pennines between Manchester and Leeds.
It's hard now to grasp how important these studios were ... few people owned a camera, they were expensive and difficult to use.
Alice took tens of thousands of pictures, offering a glimpse of a community undergoing great change; and unusually, many of them survive.
A book of her work, 'Alice's Album' is being published and an exhibition is planned for December.
Her collection, housed in a local mill is looking for a permanent home.
Andrew Carter met some of the people who knew and admired Alice.
