  Women Plumbers 22 September 2004
why aren't there more of them?

It's a familiar refrain - forget university, become a plumber and you'll earn a fortune. But a report out recently by the Equal Opportunties Commission has shown how difficult it can be for women to take that plunge.

It found that women made up less than 1% of construction workers, including plumbers, and that in 2001 there were only 17 registered female plumbers.

Many local authorities across the country have established apprenticeship schemes and they're now trying to attract more women into the trades.

One of the latest recruits at Leicester City Council, Ranjit Kaur has been awarded Apprentice Of The Year. Perminder Khatkar spent the day with Ranjit and her boss Don Barns as they prepare to refit a bathroom.
