 Women on remand constitute one of the fastest growing groups among the prison population
According to a new report Conviction:The rise of the women’s remand population’ by The Prison Reform Trust, two thirds of the twelve thousand women sent to prison in 2002 were on remand, and between 1992 and 2002 there was a 196% increase in the number of women remanded into custody compared to a 52% increase in the number of men.
Jenni Murray asks why so many women who are later acquitted or women guilty of minor crimes end up in custody, and what can be done to improve the situation.
