  Alzheimers 26 August 2004
Pensioners hand being held
The effects of the disease on the young in the family

The relationship between grandparent and child is one of the most touching there is. But if a grandparent is struck by Alzheimer's or any other form of dementia, how do you explain why he or she can no longer remember their name?

And how do those grandchildren cope?

We hear from some children who talk about their experiences.

Jenni's guest are Dr Sarah Harper, Director of the Institute of Ageing, University of Oxford and Joanne Schofield, clinical nurse manager of the Oakdene unit in Warrington who has experience of this issue in her own family.

Mile-High Apple Pie is by Laura Langston and Lindsey Gardiner, published by Random House. ISBN0-370-32736-5
