An 'abortion pill' could soon be available to take at home
Recently there's been a lot of controversy about the apparent ease with which women can get a termination. Last week headlines asked 'Is Abortion the New Pill?' A proposal currently before the Department of Health is fuelling that question. It concerns what is known as medical abortion.
At the moment an abortion pill can be used in the first nine weeks of a pregnancy. In this country it involves taking two tablets within two days of each other in a clinic. In other countries, such as the United States and France, the woman is given the second tablet to take at home where she will then miscarry.
Jenni is joined by Christa Malkin, Education Officer for the North East Region for the charity Life and Ann Furedi, President of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service who put forward the proposal for change.
