  Mystery Shoppers 3 August 2004
Paid to find out what's really going on on the shop floor

Pushy staff, badly laid out shelves and irritating background music - it's enough to ruin those days of retail therapy.

But help is at hand. Thousands of shoppers are now being employed by research firms to scrutinise shops and seek out bolshy shop assistants. Mystery Shopping has been around for about 60 years but was originally used to check on financial advisors. Now retailers are increasingly turning to it to monitor performance.

Mystery Shopper Debbie Hulme still can't believe she's being paid to go shopping. Lesley Hilton went to Manchester to meet her.
