30 years after the first broadcast, what was all the fuss about?
On the late night Radio 4 news on Tuesday 16 July 1974, it was the voice delivering the bulletin that caught most listeners' attention. The newsreader was a woman - Sheila Tracy. Television viewers had to wait a little longer before Angela Rippon's dulcet tones were regularly heard on the nine o'clock news.
Today with all women teams on breakfast television and many female newsreaders on Radio Four, it's hard to imagine what all the fuss this created thirty years ago.
Angela Rippon and Sheila Tracy join Sheila to tell her what it was like to be making the news as well as reading it.
