But whose responsibility are these children and how can they be helped?
Lizz Pearson talks to a mother who had a mental illness and a child carer about how they coped.
Alan Cooklin, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist and Jenny Goodall, Director of Social Services for Brent discuss with Jenni the problems faced by children involved in caring for an adult with mental illness, why they have fallen through the social services net and what measures can be brought in to help them.
