The rock diva, poet and artist is back with a new album, Trampin'.
Almost 30 years ago Patti Smith burst onto the scene with one of the most talked about album covers in the history of rock.
The photograph for Horses was taken by her friend and later, lover Robert Mapplethorpe and showed Patti in a man's shirt with uncombed hair and a distinctly hairy upper lip. Camille Paglia described it as "the most electrifying image I'd ever seen of a woman of my generation" .
Patti talks to Jenni about the image that transformed the pre-conceived ideas of women artists and about her new album.
Trampin' is available on the Columbia label
