  Birth rituals - Hindu 08 Mar 2004
In the next of our series exploring birth rituals in different religions, Woman's Hour looks at Hinduism. There are 16 samskaras, or rituals of transition in Hinduism, nearly half of which take place during pregnancy and the first months of a child's life.

Although there is a great deal of variation between Hindus from different regions and castes these rituals will be followed by most in one way or another.

Sharmini Selvarajah speaks to Marzia Balzani, an anthropologist who has studied birth rituals in India and to Hindu women in Birmingham and London beginning with Mar-du-vi Han-oop and Rushali Jondale. They describe what happens at the ceremony held when a woman is seven months pregnant.
