The race for Library prefect

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Jo Moir
Good morning.
It was the election to end all elections; a gathering of small but faithful students had descended on the year 11 common room (although most of them were only there for the biscuits) to vote amongst their cohort of peers for the prestigious role of Library prefect. This role had high responsibility, considerable perks and a very shiny badge. I waited with my fellow nominees as the votes were read out, aware that this was a momentous moment of history I was engaged in.
Leadership was recently described to me as ‘a series of difficult conversations’ there’s some truth in that I suspect. Authentic leadership requires wisdom, discernment, clarity, strategic thinking, integrity and courage.
Today I am turning my mind to those in government who have the burden to discern, debate and decide. Perhaps local councillors, our MP’s or MSP’s – they come to mind. For those who lead in our devolved governments or speak for us at Westminster or in the cabinet managing that series of difficult conversations around infrastructure, our institutions, public finances. I remember them for a moment, their responsibilities, the issues they face and the people they serve.
So I pray, God of righteousness would you grant to those in our governments integrity, accountability, honesty and servant hearts. May they work to enable communities to thrive, for justice to prevail and for peace to reign not only in our lands but across the globe.
In your name.
Amen.
