A musical love letter to the dawn chorus ft. Mya-Rose Craig

Orkney’s Erland Cooper dedicates an hour to his favourite sound, with music that celebrates the beauty of birdsong. Plus a safe haven from ornithologist Mya-Rose Craig.

A composer from Orkney, Erland Cooper has spent his life listening to birdsong and weaving it into his own musical creations. This episode, he celebrates the beauty of the dawn chorus, with songs that foreground our feathered friends. There’s music from the likes of Jon Hopkins, Alice Boyd and Nailah Hunter, and Erland shares a recording of a recent visit he had to the gannet colony at Bass Rock in Scotland.

And we’re transported to the sonic safe haven of fellow fan Dr Mya-Rose Craig, aka ‘birdgirl’. An ornithologist, environmentalist and presenter of the Get Birding podcast, Mya-Rose shares memories of childhoods spent in the Lake District and the song of woodwarblers that soundtracked them.
