Sam Henry, Skerryvore and an adventure in Ballynure
Celebrating Coleraine’s Sam Henry, Scottish folk icons Skerryvore and an adventure in Ballynure.
Helen Mark MBE presents BBC Radio Ulster’s weekly Ulster-Scots magazine this week alongside Rab Lennox, Jonnie Crawford and Willie Hill.
Helen takes a trip to Coleraine to mark the unveiling of a Blue Plaque to honour Coleraine born song collector Sam Henry. An Excise man in the early 1900s, Henry visited folk across the country sharing their local songs and stories and taking photos to document their life at this time. Helen chats to historians and musicians about his remarkable life.
Rab looks forward to Scottish folk rock band Skerryvore's upcoming gig in Belfast by catching up with the band as they tour North America, chatting about their current tour and upcoming new album.
Willie is - as always - out and about exploring the province - this week visiting Ballynure in Co. Antrim. He learns about connections to everyone from Alexander Hamilton to Rudyard Kipling via Mark Twain, Jonathon Swift and the Moon Landing - all during a tour of the local...graveyard! As always, listeners are invited to contact the programme with a good Ulster-Scots yarn or event to talk about. The easiest way to do that is by email – kintra@bbc.co.uk
