Match of the Day: Matchday 1 - Wednesday

The Champions League begins with the opening set of league phase fixtures. Paris Saint-Germain are defending the title they have won for the past two seasons, while Arsenal are looking to go one better after their runners-up finish. Each team plays eight games between September and January, with the top eight in the table advancing automatically to the Round of 16. The next 16 teams compete in the play-off round in February, with knock-out matches being played all the way until the final at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on 5 June next year.
