And following the Prom, 'Light and Loss', a special concert by the BBC Singers and curated and conducted by award-winning German conductor Alexander Lüken. At the heart of the programme are sublime sacred works by Brahms and Mahler. These are contrasted with a contemporary choral cycle by Stefan Heucke that sets texts from a range of writers from Nietzsche to the German-Swedish poet and playwright Nelly Sachs. A lush late-Romantic requiem by Sigfrid Karg-Elert and a tranquil work by Wilhelm Berger transporting us to a chapel on a beach completes this distinctive programme.

Presented by Georgia Mann and recorded at St Paul’s Knightsbridge, London on 15 January 2026.

Stefan Heucke: Der Verborgene Gott
Brahms: Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen?
Karg-Elert: Requiem aeternam
Mahler arr. Gottwalt: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen
Berger: Die Capelle am Strande
