Another fine equine from Andy Scott, the Scottish artist responsible for some of the world’s most iconic horse sculptures

Massive steel horse heads aren’t a common sight on a daily commute — unless, of course, you use Scotland’s M8 motorway.

These horse heads were created by Scottish sculptor Andy Scott, whose most famous creation is The Kelpies at Falkirk’s Helix Centre.

In order to increase people’s awareness of the 30m, 300 tonne Kelpies, 1:10 scale models of the heads – known as maquettes – were sent on tour around the UK and even to New York’s Bryant Park as part of 2014’s Scotland Week.

Sculptor Scott joined Princess Anne this week in the unveiling of another of his commissions – a 5m horse head – at the University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

BBC Scotland’s Bright Spark series met Andy in his studio where he spoke about the processes involved in creating his sculptures.
