Complaint
In a reference to the Six-Day War of 1967, Nick Robinson said Israel “came under attack”. A listener complaint that this perpetuated a historical myth, as the war had begun with a pre-emptive strike by Israel. In response, BBC News made a posting on the Corrections and Clarifications page of bbc.co.uk acknowledging the inaccuracy, but the listener argued there should be an on-air apology, similar to the one broadcast by another presenter who had recently made the same mistake.
Outcome
While the other presenter’s action was a commendable example of openness and transparency, the ECU did not consider the error was of such significance in relation to listeners’ understanding of current events as to require on-air correction, and found the Corrections and Clarifications posting was sufficient to resolve the issue.
