How to make scones

Watch this simple recipe tutorial to bake quick and easy scones with the kids.

You will need
  • 225g self raising flour
  • 55g butter
  • 25g caster sugar
  • 25g sultanas if you like them
  • 150ml milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Drop of milk to glaze

How to makes scones

Are they pronounced scone like cone or scone like gone? We're not sure, but what we do know is they are delicious! Whether you enjoy scones with jam and cream or butter, plain or with fruit, they're great for when you need a sweet treat, and are very simple to make.

Method

Don't forget to wash your hands before you start baking.

  1. Ask an adult to preheat the oven to 220°C (Gas Mark 7).

  2. Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.

  3. Stir in the sugar and sultanas (if using).

  4. Add the milk and mix to make a soft dough.

  5. Put the dough onto a floured surface and knead it lightly. Flatten it to about 2cm thick.

  6. Use a cutter to cut out scones and place them on a baking tray. Gather any leftover dough, flatten it again, and cut out more scones.

  7. Brush the tops with a little milk.

  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the scones are risen and golden brown.

  9. Leave to cool slightly, then enjoy!
