Swindon Town footballer Christian Roberts has been admitted to a clinic after admitting to a drinking problem.
Mr Roberts, 27, told the club last Friday of the problem before beginning a "residential period" at the Sporting Chance centre in Hampshire.
"Maybe people didn't realise how bad I actually did have it," he said. "I'd go out for three or four days at a time moving on, sleeping anywhere."
The Welsh striker joined Swindon from Bristol City in 2004.
"I hope the next time I put on a Swindon shirt I can actually repay some of the damage I've caused to the club and the fans," said Mr Roberts.
Manager Iffy Onuora said: "The club will support our players when they need help and I admire Christian for facing up to his problems and seeking help."
